Members of a Lower House panel focused on revising Â鶹´«Ã½ Constitution discussed on Thursday a potential new clause to deal with national crises ¡ª with most of those favoring revision hoping the move will achieve a breakthrough change to the top law in an area where there is already a general consensus.
The ruling Liberal Democratic Party?and its junior coalition partner Japan Innovation Party, as well as the opposition¡¯s Democratic Party for the People (DPP), are among the parties pushing for constitutional revision. Such a move has long been taboo in Japan, where the 1947 Constitution has never been amended.
¡°Since there have been deep discussions already ... I¡¯d like to propose making some kind of a detailed proposal in the next committee meeting,¡± LDP lawmaker Yoshitaka Shindo told the session of the Lower House Constitution Commission.
