A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck off the coast of Iwate Prefecture early Sunday, the latest in a spate of temblors to shake the area.
The quake, which occurred at 5:21 a.m., registered a lower 5 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7 in Hachinohe, Aomori Prefecture. No tsunami warning was issued.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the epicenter was at a depth of approximately 40 kilometers.
Sunday¡¯s temblor came just days after a magnitude 7.2 earthquake hit northern Japan. The JMA had urged the public to remain vigilant for earthquakes with a maximum seismic intensity of around an upper 6 for about a week following that quake.
On Friday, a magnitude 5.6 earthquake shook Yamanashi and its surrounding prefectures, prompting concern of possible landslides after days of heavy rain.
In a post on X, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi noted that quakes ¡°have been occurring continuously¡± in the Iwate area, and that she had ¡°once again issued instructions to assess the extent of the damage and provide timely and accurate information to the public.¡±
¡°I understand that residents are going through anxious times, but I ask that you remain vigilant and do not let your guard down,¡± she wrote.
