One of the two major fault zones that caused one of the 2016 Kumamoto earthquakes was likely behind the magnitude-7.1 earthquake that struck the same area on Tuesday.
The Hinagu and Futagawa fault zones caused the two major quakes on April 14 and 16, 2016, both of which registered the maximum shindo 7 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale.
Experts say the middle segment of the three-part Hinagu fault zone, which stretches for more than 80 kilometers, is believed to have caused the latest earthquake.
