Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is considering reshuffling her Cabinet and the executive lineup at the Liberal Democratic Party as soon as September, with Shunichi Suzuki, the current secretary-general of the ruling party, emerging as a key figure, informed sources have said.
At a time when public support for her Cabinet is falling, Takaichi may shake up both lineups with the aim of reinforcing her standing in the LDP ahead of a party leadership poll to be conducted prior to the expiration of her term in September 2027. A rift in the party has also emerged over a planned two-year cut in the consumption tax rate for food to 1% from the current 8%.
The secretary-general post is a pivotal position for sustaining an LDP administration.
