According to Tokyo, a South Korean vessel was found dropping what appeared to be a wire into the sea near the islets.
South Korea said it conducted a defense drill around the disputed Sea of Japan islets known as Takeshima in Japan, which are controlled by Seoul but claimed by Tokyo.
