The government kicked off its annual Cool Biz campaign on May 2, during which workers are encouraged to dress more casually to help reduce energy use. Cool Biz, a campaign calling on businesses to set their air conditioners at 28 degrees Celsius, will run until the end of September. But the Environment Ministry is calling on workers to “dress casually at your discretion even in October, if it is hot.” Environment Ministry officials came to work in casual clothing such as polo shirts and Hawaiian-style shirts. Cool Biz allows people to work without their usual ties and jackets in offices, and has taken root in both the public and private sectors since its launch in 2005.
