Companies and institutions in the Tohoku region that engage in the maintenance of critical infrastructure?¡ª including for electricity, water, gas and internet services ¡ª are stepping up efforts to hire and train young engineers to stave off an anticipated shortage of workers in the future.

They are also undertaking measures such as offering careful individual support to prevent attrition, in order to avoid a situation in which infrastructure cannot be maintained due to a shortage of engineers.

On July 15, at engineering firm Yurtec¡¯s training center in Tomiya, Miyagi Prefecture, 39 workers including those who had recently joined the company were demonstrating power line work skills they had acquired during a two-month training course.
